Unreal Tournament 3 PS3 shipping date confirmed, as 1.2 million units sell. Hands-on impressions below
A rather late annoucement came today in the form of a press release from Midway proclaiming a 22nd February release for Unreal Tournament 3. Rumour from Midway had already hinted at the date, but finally confirmation has come just two days before the launch. That's close, but still long after the December 11th PS3 release in the States, where the game was received fairly well by most fans of the long running series. Including the US PS3 release, the game has now sold over 1.2 million copies.
The UK release follows on from the UK PC version of the game which came out last year. Based on several hours with the final code, the PS3 version is damn fine to play, and does a great job of almost keeping pace with the exceedingly speedy PC build. As high-end console FPSs go it certainly holds it ground, and is well worth a huge chunk of your time.
Going someway towards justifying such a staggered launch, Martin Spiess, European Managing Director of Midway Games Ltd. said “It’s impossible to overstate the strategic value we place on the Unreal franchise, which is why we’re investing considerably in bespoke launches for each of the games’ formats.”

Nine years on and I'm only a little jaded playing Unreal Tournament now. It's refinements have certainly worked better than FIFA's hit and miss tweakings.
If they can streamline the mod installation and skin support, the PS3 version will go from strength to strength.
All it needs is more people putting down their imaginary MP5s for five minutes and picking up a shock rifle instead by playing UT3 online.
