If you're a regular visitor to this here site, chances are you own a PS3. PS2 games, therefore, will be fairly low down your list of priorities, particularly if you're the owner of a 40Gb model and thus can't take advantage of the earlier models' backwards compatibility.

But if you're in the position to play a PlayStation 2 title, either on your super-duper 60Gb PS3, or on the last generation's longest-lasting console, then please head down to your local games retailer this Friday (or place an online order) for Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3.

Why? Well, it's no exaggeration to say this is one of the console's finest RPGs - and it puts anything in that genre currently available on PS3 (not that that's saying much) in the shade. You play a character who - in a tabloid-baiting touch - puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger to release his inner persona, a powerful demon who can battle the otherworldly enemies that come out at night. While these sections make for an entertaining turn-based RPG on their own, it's the daytime sections that really separate this from the pack, as you interact with your schoolchums and take part in extracurricular activities. Brilliantly, whatever you choose to do during the day affects your stats when it gets dark - making the all-important character development utterly fascinating and compelling.

It's around seventy hours long too - more if you want to see everything - so you're certainly getting your money's worth. And it looks particularly glorious when fully upscaled on your HDTV.

It's not often we'll post here purely to recommend a game most of you won't have heard of, but in the case of this wonderfully quirky, unique game we're making an exception. And, at a penny under thirty quid, it won't break the bank either. Go on, give it a try.
