Rockstar unites consoles with new Social Club website
Rockstar has announced that it will be opening up a new website - the Rockstar Social Club - to keep track of Grand Theft Auto IV player stats.
The idea sounds great; while we wait for Sony to inevitably bow to pressure and introduce official Achievements or Accolades or Accomplishments when Home finally launches, we PS3 owners can finally enjoy some of that extra feeling of worth you get when winning an Achievement on an Xbox 360.
But the really unique part about the Rockstar Social Club is that it disregards console differences and tracks all the player stats together, so for the first time you'll be able to directly compare your stats with your mates who own a different console.
Apart from tracking multi-player scores and single-player accomplishments, the Social Club will also chart overall leader boards and even map all players' criminal activity from aggregated single player games to show off Liberty Cities hottest crime spots.
The site will also rank stats like time spent playing, distances run, bullets fired, and so on. A "100% Club" will reward the first 100 players to play the game to completion. They'll win a rare commemorative 'key to the city'.
That's pretty much the tip of the iceberg. There'll undoubtedly be some fascinating things to learn from a global measure of player habits and it gives Rockstar an unparalleled scope to set up new challenges and competitions whenever it feels like.
It's a long way short of enabling inter-console multiplayer or the like, but it's definitely a good step towards uniting player communities and not getting bogged down with console differences.
Registration opens up on the 15th of April.
