Dead Space movie producer talks up game-movie promos, offers underwhelming Dead Space synopsis
"[Dead Space has] a very detailed bible. It's basically "'Alien' meets 'Doom' in space." These words were uttered by Scott Greenberg, president of Film Roman which is producing the animated Dead Space movie on behalf of Starz Media on behalf of Electronic Arts during an interview with The Cut Scene. I had to laugh.
Personally, I think Alien meeting Doom in space is a grand idea, but anyone not obsessed with science fiction and gruesome death at the hands of unsightly xenomorphic monstrosities has probably just issued an audible groan. And I can't think that EA would have been desperately wanted it all pigeonholed into such pulpy sci-fi terms either.
I'm sure that had marketing managed to get to it first it would have sounded more like 'psychological deep-space thriller', 'intense and engaging high octane tale', or 'iconic sci-fi survival horror' - oh no, that's the real one.
Anyway, still sounds like good stuff and although I'm not thrilled on the concept of long-winded marketing strategies - I'd prefer just to have the game speak for itself - you can bet that this is the sign of things to come. "A has a mandate to build properties and expand into the traditional entertainment world," Greenberg confirms.
And it might not just be good for the game itself: "The whole thing will come out like a big "Dead Space" event. "That's exciting to me because it provides exposure for both sides. "We'll help drive game sales and they'll help drive TV and homevideo," said Greenberg. Should be interesting to see how it pans out.
