Rockstar net police looking for early GTA IV players

GTA_IV_police.jpgRockstar is compiling a list of Xbox Live and PSN IDs to all those who the lucky evil jammy bastards who are getting an advance copy of GTA IV this week. The reasons for this are two-fold. The first, and less sinister one, is that Rockstar doesn't want the list of achievements getting out early. It's asking for XBL privacy settings to be set to private.

The second is that it wants to make sure only an "approved list of gamers can play online prior to release".

It doesn't mention what will happen if you're not an approved user and playing online early, say if you happened to borrow a copy from the back of a lorry at the service entrance to your local Woolies. I'm speculating that some dangerous looking men will be knocking at your door and teaching you a short lesson in respecting release dates via the medium of a 10" long purple marital aid.

So if you do get a copy early, best bet would be to keep them Ethernet cables away from the console.
