SCEA considers PSP to be "a gateway drug", plans to release keyboard accessory

psp_angle_shot_qjgenth.jpgHow amusing that while on the one hand Sony has to fend off accusations of being environmentally unfriendly, while on the other hand it's comparing its handheld console to harmful, addictive substances. SCEA senior marketing manager, John Koller explained that the company sees the portable device as "gateway drug" leading to other console purchases at a Wedbush Morgan Securities Management Access Conference in New York.

This is interesting because it reflects the slight peculiar nature of the PSP. It's now a bit of an aging piece of hardware and in the years since its launch it has basically failed to pick up anything remotely spectacular in terms of a game back catalogue. And yet it seems to go from strength to strength, battling stoically with Nintendo's legendary DS handheld.

Koller even admitted "It's become, from a gaming perspective, a lot different than I think we even envisioned it when we first launched it." "That's a very good thing," he added. "It's expansionary. For us, the PSP is a very high growth, high margin business and something that is a very good product for us."

Pursuing the fact that PSP has appealed to much more than intended core of 20-40 year-old business men, Sony plans to release dedicated keyboard peripheral within the next year.

Never played Patapon, Crush or any of the other spectacular games on the PSP I see. I've been gaming for nearly 20 years and the PSP managed to impress me while others seem to bury their heads in the sand when it comes to the drastically underrated handheld.

geez! man, the writer of this article sounds like a DS fan who doesnt know anything about psp and just wants to discredit it. psp is way better than DS. It has so much more uses that DS wished it had. i have played with DS and i dont think its legendery or anything at all. most games are childish and most are 2d. Except mario and some other nintendo franchises, there arent alot of games on it. Psp on the otherhand, have u ever heard GOD OF WAR! patapon was awsome too. i havent played crisis but thats another great game.
