What is Infinity Ward up to these days?

Infinity Ward has published an official statement and a bit of teaser about its future project on its website. Shooter fans will be very familiar with Infinity Ward's work seeing as it is the studio behind the hugely popular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare FPS, which, it is keen to point out, is dominating the networks of the two console's it is available on.

Infinity Ward, however, isn't the only CoD developer and the next in the series is being developed by Treyarch, who have a lot to prove if they want to come out of IW's shadow. But then that begs the question of what exactly the real CoD masterminds are up to next. Well, all we really know is that it is still going to have Activision backing it.

"We're excited to announce that in the recent months we have decided to reup on our contract with Activision publishing," IW staff writes. "The recently renegotiated deal may not seem like much of an impact from the outside perspective, but it has laid the ground work and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we'll have complete control over."

Bear in mind that not long ago, IW was rumoured to be planning a sci-fi themed title, yielding the inevitable speculation that CoD6 might be set in space. The fact that the 'future project' is not the same as the 'unique new IP' could actually be taken as a small confirmation that. God, I hope it isn't though. Seriously, Call of Duty in space? Just, no.

Others are suggesting that IW's agreement with Activision will see it taking over all the reigns for the Call of Duty franchise, which seems plausible enough (although the company has denied any such thing). Then again, Activision's current strategy works fine, and though Treyarch hasn't managed to hit quite the same standards, it also hasn't managed to blemish the name too badly either and most importantly has sold a great deal of titles too.

So, it's anyone's guess really. Hopefully we'll get to see some really exciting stuff. I doubt that it'll be soon though, either way.
