Sony responds to LittleBigPlanet sales

LittleBigPlanet-PlayStation_3Screenshots1491033.jpgLittleBigPlanet has taken a bit of a tumble on the UK charts, but Sony has stated that it's "really pleased" with the reaction to the game. The game entered UK sales charts at number 4, but has since fallen down to 19th place. A Sony spokesperson told Eurogamer that "We're really pleased with the initial reaction to LittleBigPlanet, which has been our highest scoring game ever, I believe, with a Metacritic score of 95 per cent and a huge list of 10/10s or 100 per cent scores. We are also pleased with its commercial performance."

"In other times of the year [LBP] would be a clear number one, so you have to put the chart in context. This is an incredibly volatile time of year and the chart reflects that."

While that's true, it does sort of make you wonder why LBP was released at a time when there was so much competition from other, more well established franchises. It's a fantastic game to play and definitely deserves success. But especially as a new IP, I'm just not sure that it's going to have enough appeal to be the hardware selling, flagship title that Sony needs.
