PlayStation Network delivery service goes live

playstation video on demand.JPGThe PlayStation Network Delivery service goes live across Europe today, offering over 800 movies to rent or buy to PS3 and PSP owners.

Films ready to be downloaded at launch include Star Trek, Watchmen, Bruno, Angels and Demons and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Rentals will cost from £2.49, giving a user 14 days to watch the movie, but only 48 hours to finish the film once play has started. Buying a movie will cost from £6.99, allowing the movie to be used on up to five PS3 or PSP consoles, though not simultaneously on each. Movies cannot be transferred to a PC for viewing due to piracy restrictions. And movies cannot be transferred to an Xbox 360, for obvious reasons.

1080p high-def movies are also available to rent or buy, for a small bump-up in price.

As a limited launch offer, new PSN users will receive a free copy of the first Transformers, while returning PSN customers who buy Angels and Demons will receive a complimentary copy of The Da Vinci Code.

Sony are aiming to have as many as 50 new title available each week, so if your favourite flicks aren't up on the PSN yet, check back soon and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Trailer released for Demon's Souls

It's difficult to know what to make of this latest trailer of Demon's Souls. Revealed at Tokyo Game Show, it's a medieval hack and slash affair which puts you in the armoured shoes of a knight fighting off demonic forces of darkness. The three minute trailer doesn't reveal a whole lot about how the game is going to play, but it does suggest that we're going to get a sort of Onimusha-esque third person fighter. The production values look impressive, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of it. Let's just hope it manages to find some gameplay features that elevate it from the sea of other hack and slash adventure games.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li gets trailer

With Street Fighter IV due to come out of consoles in Feburary, it looks like Capcom is keen to get the fighting series back into the console playing mainstream. While the steady stream of VS. installments and re-releases have kept more die-hard Street Fighter fans entertained, I think Capcom's hoping that it can get the game out to a larger audience. I don't know how well this Chun Li centric movie adaptation will work, but rest assured, it's likely to be better than the late nineties live action flick.

First footage of Watchmen: The End is Nigh

Nope, I don't know how they're going to get across Watchmen's tale of allegorical political intrigue in this beat 'em up either. What I'm hoping for is a serviceable beat 'em up. The Watchmen license is almost incidental. It'd be a tough property to translate to any video game genre, and having it as a third person beat 'em up's going to limit your options a bit. It's encouraging that its a downloadable, episodic title though. With a bit of luck it'll just be a solid, fun, short play.

Batman: Arkham Asylum teaser looking suitably dark, menacing

While it doesn't give away a lot of information on how the game will actually play, this latest teaser for the upcoming Batman: Arkham Asylum is promising. The setting has definitely got plenty of potential, as anyone who has read the rather fantastic "A Serious House on Serious Earth" graphic novel will attest. Let's just hope it doesn't turn out to be a soulless Gears of War clone with some light stealth mechanics thrown in.

Latest American PS3 ad is surprisingly good

Few can deny that Sony puts a lot of effort into their ads. Some of them, like the one showing the PS3 octopus/city thingie, work quite well. Others, like the This is Living campaign, seem to be so intent on being hip and viral that they forget to sell the console. This latest effort gets the balance just right. Great production values, a little odd, but most importantly you get to see the games that Sony's trying to sell you.

Game breaking glitch found in LittleBigPlanet

Games that allow User Generated Content have it tough because you can bet that gamers will -often inadvertantly- find ways of breaking your game. Someone's done just that with LittleBigPlanet. If you create a massive spinning wheel and set the speed to maximum, then your character will be caught in an inescapable wheel of death. Not even exiting to the Pod will save you, meaning the only way to play the game is to delete your saves. Expect this problem to be patched out of existence pretty soon. The video above shows you how to break the game, but trying to replicate said breaking would not be a smart idea.

Check out twenty minutes of Heavy Rain

hr_screen23_low_0004.jpgIf you want to see more about upcoming adventure game Heavy Rain, check out the the video on the jump. Site gamekyo has recorded more than twenty minutes of demonstration, during the recent Micromania Game Show in Paris, showcasing the game's lack of loading screens and cutscene-light approach. The game's due for release some time in the latter half of 2009.

Heavy Rain looks like it could be dangerously good. It's from Quantic Dream and David Cage, the man behind Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy in the USA), someone who takes story telling in videogames pretty seriously. While Fahrenehit had its share of flaws - an over-reliance on Quicktime Events and a poor finale among them- theere are few other games available that can hook you in and involve you in the same way.

Sonic starring in animated short, Night of the Werehog

Sonic will be coming to a computer screen near you soon, with animated short "Night of the Hedgehog" due to be released online to build up hype for the upcoming Sonic Unleashed. Doubtless it'll provide the in-depth character study and plot motivations that we've come to expect from the exploits Sonic and Co over the years. Froggy?

Still, the animation looks refreshingly high budget, and with a bit of luck it'll provide the earnest Saturday morning kid's show feel that Sonic's mined heavily since his jump into 3D.

Yahtzee reviews Silent Hill: Homecoming

I've been looking forward to this one for a while. Yahtzee's made previous reference to his love for the series, and he gives this latest iteration a surprisingly even-minded review. Watching it, I can't help but wonder what's going to happen to the survival horror genre. Pre-Resident Evil 4, players put up with characters that steered like broken tanks, but all the horror games recently have had more of an emphasis on action. Action's more fun from a gameplay point of view, but it's just not as scary. I'm looking forward to seeing how Dead Space tackles it though. Dead Space is out in the UK at the end of the week, but Silent Hill: Homecoming is coming out in Europe until February of next year. D'oh!

Leipzig GC 2008: Heavy Rain is looking creepy, QTE-heavy

There's some new footage of mysterious PS3 exclusive, Heavy Rain, which apparently was the title behind one of the first PlayStation Tech demos (thanks Ars). It's been missing for a few months, as you can tell, but hype building is definitely starting in full force with this latest trailer, shown off during the Sony press conference at Leipzig. Here's how it's looking:

Spooky, graphically undertstated but certainly impressive although the animations seem a bit clunky. I'm not a huge fan of all those quick time events either, but would definitely like to give this a go for its atmospheric charm.

The brain behind it is Quantic Dream, developer responsible for Indigo Prophecy aka Fahrenheit, which was itself an impressive, atmospheric adventure right up until it seemed to run out of steam half way through and turn all silly. It's due out on the 3 next year.

In lieu of PSN movies and TV shows, Europe gets VidZone streaming

vidzone_logo.pngEarly next year, Sony will be rolling out a new video streaming service to PAL PS3 owners. The free VidZone service provides music videos to your PS3 and PSP (via remote play).

Actually, VidZone already exists - you can check it out here - and it is apparently one of Europe's leading online music video services. Everything you find on the web version will be incorporated into the PS3 version, including building playlists, personalisation downloading songs, videos and ringtones at a charge.

This is of course a small consolation prize for having to wait, well, god knows how long for a proper PSN movie and TV show download service, such as the rolled out in North America for E3. However, Sony promises that "a comprehensive film, TV and music download service" will launch at a later date. The more, the merrier, eh?

Leipzig GC 2008: Killzone 2 multiplayer trailer

Behold, some Killzone 2 footage outlining the multiplayer features that the game will offer. I have to admit, with Killzone being put on hold in favour Resistance 2, and Resistance 2 looking so promising with its 60 player support, new player classes, etc, we were all feeling a little sceptical about KZ2's chance of making much of an impression. But the latest looks at the game are steadily swaying us...

Wow - it's looking the business, and with many months of fine tuning time still left to balance it out too. That will be very important too because the rock-paper-scissors tactics of gun emplacements, aerial support, snipers and C4 booby traps need to be carefully weighed up to keep them fair AND fun. When you get it right, like CoD4 managed, it pays off in spades. Now then, where's the beta got to?

Leipzig GC 2008: New Resident Evil 5 trailer

Capcom has released a fresh Resi 5 trailer for the Leipzig Games Convention. There's a fair bit of stuff you'll recognise if you've watched all the other trailers, but there are some clearly new bits towards the end.

All in all, it's still looking good. The scientists gathering syringes of evil-ridden substances at least harks back to the (in my opinion) good old days when Resi was all about immoral experiments gone horribly awry, not the just weird cults and Las Plagas. Hopefully 5 will strike a decent halfway-ground between the series reinvention of 4 and the many other titles that preceded it.

Superb Metal Gear Solid 4 mobile ad - Save the world with your fingers

This is a new, quite long advert for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4 mobile game. It's also called Metal Gear AC!D Mobile in the ad, which has me a bit confused. Basically, it's MGS4, for tiny little handsets. The concept of the ad is saving the world with your fingers. And some healthy mockery of MGS4's pretentiousness.

If you don't want to watch the whole thing, make sure you skip to 2:35 for the very disturbing men's mag photos. Now I'm off to draw Solid Snake on my index finger.

E3 2008: Duke Nukem Trilogy trailer carefully reveals nothing at all

I was very glad I found this trailer as I was going to cover the announcement of a version of the original Duke Nukem (and some extra content) destined for PSP. I somehow lost track of it in the E3 fun though, but then I found this trailer.

And what a brilliant video it is too, carefully avoiding all the common pitfalls of normal video game trailers, such as over-bearing emphasis on gameplay footage, not displaying the title logo often enough, not having rocking guitar solos and being about seven minutes too short.

Thankfully the genius behind this one realised that the only thing needed to sell a Duke Nukem re-release is a video with nuclear explosions and over 50 close-up shots of the logo.

In case you didn't catch it, that was Duke Nukem Critical Mass, Duke Nukem Proving Grounds and Duke Nukem Chain Reaction. Be sure to write those down.

E3 2008: God of War III video affirmation

There's absolutely nothing to be learned from this new trailer, other than 'GOD OF WAR III'! Did we mention GOD OF WAR III! by the way? Well, we couldn't very well let E3 pass without some mention of it. That would be like forgetting to tell you that those Square Enix sell-outs have sided with the man and opted for a multiplatform release of Final Fantasy XIII. Those pussies.

E3 2008: So this is the gameplay behind the LittleBigPlanet hype

LittleBigPlanet has been one of the main sails powering the good ship PS3 for over a year now. It is dutifully trundled out at every conceivable trade show event - I wonder if Media Molecule actually has time to do anything but work on custom builds for each time Sony goes on a publicity drive. There are definitely seeds of scepticism beginning to spout in my cynicism allotment.

Needless to say, it's out in force for E3 although this time accompanied by someone actually attempting to play it rather than just letting journos giggle at how adorable it all is, and I have to say it looks a little underwhelming.

The character customisation and level building tools still sound amazing, but in the end if there's nothing actually worth doing with them, the whole game's appeal will shrivel up and die like a salted slug. Based on what we've just seen, it's still a pretty basic platforming affair and unless there's a lot more depth to the final product I can't see that having the legs to become the console seller it is meant to.

E3 2008: Resistance 2 gameplay footage! Single and multiplayer!

Trailers? Pah! Shameless cinematics dripping with greasy pre-rendering and fatty touch-ups. Gameplay footage is where the real measure of a game is tested. I've had my doubts about whether Resistance 2 can really live up to its promises in such a short time frame, even despite the developers previous offering and unnerving ability to delivery absurdly polished games in the it takes a normal company to come up with a tech demo. Well those doubts are officially assuaged. Observe:

Cloud-scraping alien behemoths... check. Awesome cinematic gameplay... check. Vast level design.... check. Stunning graphics... check. I would not want to be another PS3 FPS developer right now *cough* Guerilla *cough*.

In fact, I think we should just call off the Gears of War 2 / Resistance 2 showdown. Let it go lock horns with Killzone 2. They are much better matched: each features pointless, over-excitable space marines, a complete lack of colour, zero intelligible plot and a daft cover system - only girls hide from bullets behinds bits of fallen masonry.

E3 2008: New Prince of Persia looks incredibly stylish

Blimey, all these E3 videos keep on rolling in. And the big Sony keynote hasn't even happened yet. This latest, courtesy of UbiSoft, shows off the incredibly stylish visuals for the first next gen appearance of the prince.

Alright, so technically it's not been said if this is to actually be a PS3 release. But you've got to believe that nobody would be quite so stupid as to avoid such a popular console.

Plus, stylish visuals + Sigur Ros = a major win in my book.

E3 2008: PS3 BioShock footage - gets brand new Carnival area

BioShock on the PS3 has received its first airing, and doesn't look too much different from the Xbox 360 version. Well, apart from the brief glimpse of the brand new 'Carnival' area that the PS3 version is set to pack.

The trailers all nice and graphically wonderful with the emphasis on some hardcore conflict, but don't let that put you off. BioShock is one of the scariest games EVER, and with some extra drops of content, this PS3 version of the game is bound to be the absolute number 1.

E3 2008: Dead Space makes nursery rhymes scary

The more I see of Dead Space, the more like a spiritual successor to System Shock 2 it seems. Oh sure, Bioshock was actually the spiritual successor to SS2, but even though System Shock can't be said to have cornered the market in creepy space shooters, there's something about Dead Space that keeps making reminisce about those heady days of fixing broken pistols while giant slavering monsters stalked the runined, deserted hallways and cabins around me. That's not a bad thing either.

It's due out on Halloween, although that is probably for the US - I've no idea how that will realistically translate into a UK launch date, but it is a Friday, so hopefully we'll see a simultaneous launch and we're also praying that EA doesn't rush its dev team o meet some arbitrary holiday date at the cost of spit and polish. Given EA's record for PS3 ports, I think we all know which version would lose out the most from over-eagerness.

E3 2008: New Resistance 2 trailer showcases big, BIG bosses

Below is technically the thrid Resistance 2 trailer to grace the humble interwebs; the second having been launched, then quickly pulled by Eurogamer at the beginning of the month. This one has has less specifically to do with Nathan Hale or his mystery-shrouded adversaries, but does do a fine job of showcasing the enormous bosses and Chimeran war machines.

I hope you'll forgive me when I say: ohmygodohmygodohm *breath* ygodohmygodohmyGOD. Looking good, Insomniac. Looking VERY good. The face off between this and gears of War 2 is shaping up to be a real treat, especially if they both hit their pre-Xmas deadlines.

What we haven't seen so far is much in the way of gameplay footage, specifically the eight player co-op or the 60(!) player multiplayer, both of which have huge technical question marks hanging over them. With a bit of luck there might be some more in-game emerging from E3 soon - we'll post it as soon as we find it.

E3 2008: Nearly 5 minutes of stunning Fallout 3 footage!

Alright, so it may be from the Microsoft portion of the early sniff of E3, but with Fallout 3 being a multiformat title, it dearly needs to be shown off. And this is close to 5 minutes of in-game footage to ogle.

I'll admit it. I'm a touch under whelmed. The enemies don't seem to respond to a shotgun to the leg with any semblance of realism, and while the world may be good looking, it looks a bit sparse really.

Still, its one of my most highly anticipated titles for the end of 2008, so I'll reserve full judgement for the moment.

PSP Go!View is go!

logo_go_view.gif

Sony and Sky have announced that Go!View video on-demand service is now available for PSPs in the UK and RoI. You can sign up over at GoView.tv right now and get a free month long trial subscription.

Go!View essentially consists of a monthly subscription service that allows you to download content directly to your PC and then transfer it over to the handheld. It would have been nice to see a service make proper use of the PSP's wireless network connection, but the standard is probably far too old now to make for a practical download service. Not if you wanted any battery left afterwards anyway.

Because it is Sky, Go!View grants access to a pretty wide range of content provided by a large number of distributers and broadcasters, including Disney-ABC-ESPN Television, BBC Worldwide, Sony Pictures Television International, NBC Universal International Television Distribution, National Geographic and Sky Sports.

The payment system is a little bit more complicated than a straight forward per episode download (although that is available from £1.50 per show), encouraging you to subscribe to various packs. These consist of Entertainment, Comedy and Sports - a single pack costs £5, two cost £8 and all three sets you back £11.

This week on the PlayStation Store

Okay, it's getting a bit old to spend week in, week out whinging about the raw deal we get from SCEE and its PlayStation store updates, so this week I'm going to be entirely positive about everything in it. All seven items of it. But, no, it's July and thus the sun is supposed to be out (it isn't) and thus games companies shelter in their dank basements waiting for the lucrative winter months, not making anything worth playing.

Echochrome has been through the complicated grinding machine that is the regionalisation process and has made its debut on the European store. Echochrome is a puzzle game - a very unique one too and with unparalleled scope for user customisation. Because we've been forced to hang around for the European version, we get the benefit of a load of extra levels generated by the Echochrome community. That's cool, huh?

There are two versions available - one for the PS3 and one scaled down version for the PSP. As well as being smaller, it is a couple of quid cheaper too, with the versions costing £6.99 adn £4.99 respectively.

In demos, you've got the Top Spin 3 demo. Such a shame it missed the excitement of the Wimbledon weekend last week, which would have been a cracking bit of marketing timing that might have earned the game a few impulse buys, at least in this country. But never mind, criticism has no place on this update.

First Max Payne movie trailer hits web

So this is the first glimpse of the Hollywood adaptation of Max Payne. I love Max Payne. Not like that. I really want this movie to somehow, incredibly, buck the trend that afflicts all other video game movies. I realise it's a long shot.

There are so many reasons why it can't work, even without the many, many diabolical video game movie adaptations preceding it. For starters, Mark Wahlberg is dreadful. I used to think he was bearable (although I can't think of a single film he was any good in), but then I saw The Happening, aka the most ironically named movie in history.

Next, what the fuck is going on with all that religious jibberish? The Max Payne games don't have much religious leaning other than in a very cynical way. And the big flappy demon whatnot? Can't recall any demonic forces in the games. Ever. Not even Jack Lupino.

On the other hand, GUNS! Lots of guns. And diving! Diving whilst firing GUNS! Plus explosions and diving and MORE GUNS. Someone evidently looked at a Max Payne game before making the trailer, so my faith is still semi-intact. Also, Mila Kunis makes a surprisingly accurate Mona in that lift. Pity Marky Mark couldn't lay off the pies a bit more.

Yet another Resistance 2 trailer!

Remember that Resistance 2 video from the other day? Rubbish wasn't it? Sorry about that. Judging from this latest vid, we suspect that was merely a tiny snippet of this much greater, full-blown trailer. Check it out:

This time, not only is Nathan Hale growing some personality, along with some vocal chords, but it seems the mysterious is-it-an-alien-or-was-it-the-fault-of-those-pesky-Russians? antagonist will actually be doing something other than running around growling menacingly and firing futuristic weapons from the past with wild inaccuracy.

There may even be a single speaking evil entity. His throat sounds a little hoarse, but he probably picked up a nasty cold out in the depths of Siberia. We look forward via the medium of a L209 LAARK, sometime in November.

Sony show off Firmware 2.40 in snazzy video

Sony have launched a delightful little walkthrough video for Firmware 2.40 on the PS3, and all is pretty unexciting really if you ask me. Essentially, 2.40 will give us all access to the in-game XMB that's been talked about for bloody ages, and from this first video, Sony are still playing catch up to Xbox Live.

The ability to send a message to other folks while in game? I can already do that on my 360. The chance to play whatever tunes I like in game? Again, I've been doing that on my Xbox 360 for bloody ages too.

Though in Sony's defence, their online set up is still brand spankingly free, and now offers just about everything that the subscription based Xbox Live! system is able to give.

The very end of the video promises chat on the 'Trophy system' next time, so that one should be quite exciting. No word on when it'll be available, nor any release date for 2.40 other than "very soon."

More details on upcoming PlayStation Video Store

playStation_video_store_sml.jpgAs we learned yesterday, Sony is planning to roll out a new video store section of the PSN this summer. Well, summer-ish. In Europe it'll probably be more like summer 2010. Doesn't matter though, because that'll give it time to sign up more studios to add to the mix.

Essentially, the PlayStation Video Store might be a direct copy of Xbox 360's Video Marketplace, but Variety's game blog Cutscene reveals that there are plans to make the service just a little bit more special. Sony is discussing with partners about the potential for allowing PSP functionality as well as normal PS3 viewing.

This could either mean downloads designed directly for the PSP (which would also infringe on Sony's own UMD movie business) or it could mean that any download or rental you purchase will be compatible with the PSP for you to enjoy however and wherever you wish. That would tie in neatly with Sony's lofty Blu-ray PSP goals.

Variety does point out that this will this complicate any deals Sony is looking to strike with studios and could reduce the impact of the initial service. You'd hope that while faced with the growing popularity of illegal download sites, studios would be eager to find delivery platforms to sell their content conveniently and in high-quality, but then this is Hollywood we're talking about.

Resistance 2 Walker footage

Although Resistance 2 isn't quite where we'd term 'right around the corner', it's November release date isn't far off. Yet there has been precious little actual footage of it so far. But this is some, and the first to show the huge enemy Walkers in action. Well, largely off the side of the screen to be fair.

Graphically, it isn't looking particularly stunning, but that is likely to change as spit and polish is applied over the coming months. We expect something more comprehensive to be on show at the coming E3.

PlayStation Video Store to hit the US this summer, Europe and Japan to follow

PlayStation_video_store_pres.jpg

Along with the Life with PlayStation concept, Kaz Kirai has re-confirmed that the PlayStation Store will soon be sporting a Video Download Service in the near future. While this isn't a strictly official announcement, it is confirmed in a set of presentation files found here (page 6).

Other sites are also revealing that the time frame on the service is summer for the US, but Europe and Japan will be coming later. Anyone care to wager on who'll be third on the list?

There will also be a more official and public announcement made at E3. Meanwhile, Korea is already enjoying its own video store service so hopefully there shouldn't be any huge obstacles to prevent a smooth roll out. Naturally, this has been a highly anticipated move following Xbox 360's successful launch of its Video Marketplace. Now we're just itching to know what the actual content will be.

Limbo of the Lost's shockingly bad ending

It might be a PC game, but hopefully most of you will have heard of a recently released title by the name of Limbo of the Lost. Mainly due to the fact that it blatantly steals assets from a multitude of games.

A pretty terrible point and click adventure title in essence, the game has become famous for its horribly obvious theft of audio, artwork, and pretty much everything from titles from Oblivion, through to Thief III. If you need to get clued up, have a swift read of this.

Anyway, the ending of said title has finally hit the web, and there aren't really any words to describe its, um, 'quality'. Best to just take a peek and have a giggle yourself. The pianist's hands are bloody TERRIFYING to me anyway.

Fingers crossed the 'developers' of this title never find themselves able to release another game ever again.

New Resident Evil 5 trailer reveals female side-kick

As promised, Capcom provide a fresh peek at Resident Evil 5 this weekend at the Captivate08 event. You can see it here, but you can also hit up GameTrailers for the Japanese full HD version.

First and foremost, we get a look at Chris Redfield's new partner. We're keeping our fingers crossed that this will be the character controlled in the rumoured coop mode. Chris can also be heard making a reference to previous Resi star, Jill Valentine.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 confirmed

It has been a good morning for rumours solidifying into full blown FACTS. At yesterday's Ubidays event, Ubisoft showed a sneak trailer of an upcoming new sequel that's bound to get few people panting with excitement. This trailer actually:

Eagle-eyed viewers might have spotted the iconic protagonist Jade in the background, and the unmistakeable Pey'j. Or more likely you saw the header. Anyway, it's Beyond Good and Evil 2. I confess that Beyond Good and Evil is a game I haven't actually played, nor even seen anyone play, and not for any good reason that I can discover. So I'll have to sort that out.

A bit of research reveals that the first game - a critical if not particularly commercial success - left the story open to a sequel. Graphically, the next outing is obviously looking to impress, and though pre-rendered cutscenes aren't really indicative of the final game quality, there's a vague rumour this might have actually been run in the game engine. We'll see.

Ubisoft teasingly didn't make any further details known. We can't even be 100% certain it'll be coming to the PS3. But rumours say Xbox 360 and PS3 are the likely platforms of choice. Tough luck for Nintendo and PC owning fans of the original then.
